Mexican Oregano
Bold, citrusy-sweet and slightly peppery oregano for tacos, salsa, beans, chilli, soups and slow-cooked dishes.
SpiceBloom Mexican Oregano brings a brighter and more assertive flavour than the Mediterranean oregano commonly used in Italian cooking. Its citrusy, mildly sweet and peppery character works particularly well with chilli, tomato, beans, grilled meats and smoky seasonings.
The herb is sourced from Mexico and sun-dried before being packed in small batches in New Zealand. Crush it lightly between your fingers before use to break up the dried leaves and release more of their aroma into the dish.
A Distinctive Herb for Mexican-Inspired Cooking
Use it where you want more citrus, pepper and earthy character than standard Mediterranean oregano provides.
Tacos and Enchiladas
Add to meat, bean or vegetable fillings with chilli, cumin, garlic, onion and tomato.
Beans, Chilli and Stews
Stir into black beans, pinto beans, chilli, soups and slow-cooked tomato-based dishes.
Grilling and Marinades
Combine with chipotle, citrus, oil and garlic for chicken, beef, pork, mushrooms or vegetables.
Mexican Oregano vs Mediterranean Oregano
Mexican oregano and Mediterranean oregano are used in different culinary traditions and have noticeably different flavour profiles. Mexican oregano is generally brighter, more citrusy and slightly peppery, while Mediterranean oregano is typically more herbaceous and closely associated with Italian and Greek dishes.
Mexican oregano is especially suited to recipes built around chilli, beans, tomato, corn, cumin and smoky flavours. Mediterranean oregano remains the more familiar choice for pizza, pasta sauces, Greek salads and olive-oil-based marinades.
They can be substituted when necessary, but the finished flavour will change. Use a smaller amount at first when replacing standard oregano with Mexican oregano.
How to Use Mexican Oregano
- Crush before adding: Rub the leaves lightly between your fingers to break them up.
- Tacos: Add to minced meat, shredded chicken, beans or roasted vegetable fillings.
- Salsa and sauces: Stir into cooked tomato salsa, enchilada sauce or chilli-based marinades.
- Beans and soups: Add during simmering so the flavour can spread through the cooking liquid.
- Grilled food: Combine with chipotle, cumin, garlic, citrus and oil.
- Substituting: Start with less than the recipe’s standard oregano quantity and adjust after tasting.

These dried herbs were low on aromatics and high in trash. I consider trash to include pieces of plastic filament and large woody stems.
Hi Zach,
Thank you for your feedback.
Mexican oregano is naturally quite different from Mediterranean oregano. It has a more robust structure, with woody stems and a stronger, earthy flavour profile. What you’re describing is actually characteristic of authentic Mexican oregano — it is not the same as the softer, finely crumbled Mediterranean variety many people are used to.
We source our Mexican oregano from Tio Pablo, a well-known supplier of authentic Mexican ingredients, and many of our customers specifically choose it because of its distinctive aroma and traditional texture for dishes like tacos and Mexican stews.
That said, if you received anything you believe is outside normal product standards, please feel free to contact us directly and we’ll be happy to look into it for you.
We appreciate you giving it a try.
